Conques is one of the most beautiful villages in France with a magnificent 10-12th century abbey. It has a surviving medieval wall, town gates and narrow cobbled streets. This painting shows Porte de la Vinzelle, which is typical of these features. Conques has for a long time been a major stopping-off point on the Way of St James, the pilgrim route that leads from Le Puy in central France to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain.
