| El Hierro is the smallest and furthest south and west of all the Canary Islands. In the 2nd century AD, Tolemy considered the zero meridian (i.e before Greenwich) to run through El Hierro since it was the most western position of the Old World. This allowed maps to have only positive (eastern) longitudes. This view is across El Golfo Bay with its 1000 m cliffs, the bay being part of the caldera of a huge 50,000 year-old volcano. Columbus passed close by this lonely volcanic island in 1492. |
